The DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative is excited to inaugurate its Civic Leaders Scholarship for high school and undergraduate students. Nearly two thousand dollars in cash prizes will be awarded to students who demonstrate the potential for extraordinary leadership. Applicants do not need prior experience in community engagement?the DCTMI values students? creativity and their determination to make a difference.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened political polarization, how can you demonstrate and encourage civic leadership in your community? Write a response between 500 and 700 words in length.
Only high school and undergraduate students attending school in Virginia, Washington D.C., or Maryland are welcome to apply. The deadline to submit an essay is April 30, 2021 at 11:59 PM. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Entries must be fully typed and in English (handwritten entries not accepted). Do not include any personally identifying information in your essay. Supplemental materials will not be considered. Failure to adhere by guidelines will result in disqualification.
Your essay will be judged on the following criteria:
- Originality and creativity
- Clarity and conciseness
- Grammar and mechanics
The winners will receive the following prizes:
- First place award ? $1000
- Second place award ? $500
- Third place award ? $250
All prizes are direct cash payments to winners. There is no entry fee. Winners will be invited to interview for a summer internship with the DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative.
Winners will be contacted no later than June 1st, 2021. They will be required to attend a virtual ceremony, but may opt out of the interview if they wish to do so.
