AHC Inc.

AHC’s Arlington Resident Services program focuses primarily on comprehensive education programs; after school, teen, college & career, and summer camp programs for elementary through high school students. The program also provides community connections and onsite programs to help adults strengthen their economic stability and build stronger futures for themselves and their families.

Asian American LEAD

AHC Inc.

Asian American LEAD (AALEAD) supports low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth with educational empowerment, identity development, and leadership opportunities through after school, summer, and mentoring programs. Our Mentoring Program matches youth between the ages of 10-18 in the District of Columbia, Montgomery County, MD; and Fairfax County, VA. Mentors must be 21 or older and must be committed to meeting with their student for a minimum of 6 hours a month for a year.

Beacon House

Beacon House, located in the Edgewood neighborhood in Ward 5, provides homework help and one-on-one or group tutoring for more than 150 kids annually. Programming for older students includes college and career readiness. In addition to helping youth with school assignments, volunteers work with students on hands-on projects and educational games. Enrichment activities include science experiments, cooking lessons, sports, and visual and performing arts. Beacon House engages around 100 volunteers per year. Volunteers are subject to background checks.

Best Kids

Best Kids empowers youth in foster care to build better futures. It works with youth between the ages of 6 and 21 years old to develop a positive sense of self, acquire teamwork and group social skills, and to become productive members of society. BEST Kids mentors spend ten hours a month in person with their community-based mentees and also maintain weekly contact in some form. Mentors must be 21 years old or older, commit for at least 1 year, have access to a reliable vehicle, and have both clean driving and criminal background records.

CASA

The mission of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children of DC is to promote volunteer advocacy so abused and neglected children in the foster care or juvenile justice system can be safe, establish permeance, and be given a chance to thrive. This not-for-profit organization recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to work with youth. CASA volunteers must be at least 21 and pass the application and screening process.

Center City Public Charter Schools

Center City Public Charter Schools (Center City PCS) empower our students for lifelong success by building strong character, promoting academic excellence, and generating public service throughout Washington D.C.

City Gate

City Gate’s mission is to embody a vision of community-based upon justice, compassion, and spirituality that values every individual and promotes the growth of mutual relationships. It accepts volunteers of all ages, provided there is an adult chaperone.

College Bound

College Bound offers tutoring, mentoring, ACT/SAT preparation, and academic and career guidance free-of-charge to assist students in the District of Columbia metropolitan area in meeting their post-secondary educational goals. It is currently recruiting volunteers for the upcoming school year to mentor 8th-12th grade students at a conveniently located sites across the city for 2 hours each week.

Communities in Schools

Communities in Schools of the Nation’s Capital (CISNCAP) support youth in DC public schools so they can overcome personal challenges and structural barriers. This organization works directly with the schools to identify students who are most at risk of dropping out and works directly with those kids. CISNCAP establishes relationships with local businesses, social service agencies, health care providers, and volunteers to provide schoolwide programming such as college fairs, health screenings, and study groups. Of the students CISNCAP serves, 65% improved their attendance, 90% improved their behavior, and 79% improved their academic performance.

Community Club

Community Club is a DC based tutoring and mentoring program. Every Thursday evening during the DCPS/Charter school year, 120 students and their tutors meet one-on-one at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, located just east of the White House, to do schoolwork, to talk, and to be together.

Community Family Life Services

Community Family Life Services provides children, families, and adults the tools to move beyond poverty and homelessness. This nonprofit also supports women following their release from incarceration. Services include transitional housing, health and wellness, employment coaching and placement, and family education. Volunteers are needed for food distribution, childcare during events CFLS clients attend, and the clothing room.

Community of Hope

Community of Hope creates opportunities for low-income families, including those who are experiencing homelessness, to achieve good health, a stable home, family-sustaining income, and hope. It seeks mentors and tutors for two programs: 1. Permanent Supportive Housing Mentoring Program: Mentors do activities with their mentees at least twice a month at location and time of mentor’s choice. 2. After School Tutoring Program for Columbia Heights Emergency Family Shelter: CoH will be starting an after-school program at its Columbia Heights emergency family shelter, which houses 20 families and may have 30 school-age kids.

Dance Place

Community of Hope

Dance Place is a nonprofit center in DC offering performances, classes for children and adults, and arts in education programs for youth. It centers on those who have been systemically excluded from opportunities in the arts. Dance Place offers inclusive ticketing options and scholarships for its educational programs. All are welcome regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexuality, socio-economic background, or physical or mental ability. Volunteers are needed to work front-of-house shifts during performances, stuff envelopes, work at the front desk, and plan small community initiatives. Perks for volunteers include free adult dance classes and performance tickets.

DC Reengagement Center

DC 127’s mission is to mobilize the Church to empower children and families who are at risk of being separated or have been impacted by the foster care system. The organization serves foster, adoptive, kinship, and biological families. The goal is to protect vulnerable children in DC. Volunteer opportunities include the Communities for Families program, where you commit to working with a family for six months. You can also serve as a village or childcare volunteer with DC 127’s Foster Care Support program.

DCPS Competitive Employment Opportunities

Competitive Employment Opportunities (CEO) offers a premier mentoring and internship model that gives students with disabilities unparalleled access to their careers of interest. The innovative model pairs students with mentors based on common career interests. Students also partake in professional developments (PD) to prepare them for the workplace.

ECHO

ECHO (Ecumenical Community Helping Others) helps people in need in Burke and Springfield, VA. It offers financial and food assistance to people experiencing emergencies as well as access to donated clothing, household goods and school supplies to those who struggle on low incomes. Its School Partnership program works with schools in our area to provide volunteer mentors and tutors at all grade levels. Mentoring takes place once a week during student lunch periods while tutoring can take place during school hours or after school.

Everybody Wins! DC

The mission of EW!DC is to pair students with Reading Mentors to instill a love of reading and learning and foster a sense of self-esteem. The ideas behind its mission remain simple and straightforward, yet can bring about profound change in the lives of young students: expose children to literature, give them a positive role model, inspire them to read and you will make a difference in their lives.

Excel Beyond the Bell (EBB)

Our Excel Beyond the Bell Collaborative is a public-private partnership created by the Collaboration Council to inspire our youth to realize their full potential by offering safe, quality and accessible out-of-school time programs. Together with the Montgomery County Recreation Department and Montgomery County Public Schools, we offer the EBB Middle School Program at eight schools while striving to increase positive outcomes for youth across the county by creating and supporting a high-quality after school workforce.

Experience Corps (AARP Foundation)

The AARP Foundation Experience Corps is made up of a network of program partners in cities and regions across the United States. While each of them adheres to the Experience Corps’ standards and delivers its evidence-based tutoring model, all partners are unique. The Experience Corp in the DC area is hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, which focuses on academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

Fairfax County Public Schools MentorWorks program

The mission of the MentorWorks program is to eliminate gaps in opportunity, access, and achievement through mentoring and to ensure that every FCPS student can name an adult they can talk to.

For Love of Children

FLOC’s vision is a city where every child’s potential – regardless of zip code, skin color or family status – is unlocked with a post-secondary degree, opening the doors to success in life. FLOC sparks community transformation by paving the way to post-secondary success for DC students. It ensures access to free, high-quality afterschool services from 1st grade through college and career, exposing students to experiences and opportunities that help them establish a framework of success.

Free Minds Book Club

Free Minds uses the literary arts to help incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth and adults achieve their education, career, and life goals. The organization has reached more than 1,500 individuals since its founding in 2002 and has received numerous awards. Free Minds offers internships and other volunteer opportunities, including writing letters to inmates and typing their hand-written poems.

Generation Hope

Generation Hope aims to ensure all student parents have the opportunities to succeed and experience economic mobility, Generation Hope engages education and policy partners to drive systemic change and provides direct support to teen parents in college as well as their children through holistic, two-generation programming.

Girls Prep

Girls Prep helps African-American and Latinx girls and young women set short-term and long-term goals to achieve the dream of attending college and obtaining a career. This nonprofit is looking for women mentors in the DC area who will be paired with a protégé in high school or college to help them navigate the challenges of school, career, and relationships. Mentors must have a college degree, meet with a protégé for at least four hours a month, and participate in seminars and mentor training. Women who identify as BIPOC are strongly encouraged to apply.

Global Kids

Global Kids-DC educates, inspires, and mobilizes youth to succeed in school, achieve post-secondary success, and act on critical issues facing their communities and the world. GK-DC provides school day and after-school programs at school sites and its headquarters, as well as summer enrichment activities. Current DC school partners include Anacostia High School, Ballou High School, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, McKinley Tech, Bell Multicultural High School, and McFarland Middle School. Volunteer opportunities include tutoring and college application support.

Heyman Interages Center

The Heyman Interages® Center brings together adults and students in programs that enrich the lives of students academically, socially and culturally. At the same time, Interages®’ programs help adults maintain community connections by sharing their skills and time through opportunities to build healthy relationships with the younger generation. It invites volunteers age 50 to participate in our numerous programs that provide intergenerational strategies to addressing challenges facing students, older adults, schools and communities.

Higher Achievement

Higher Achievement’s rigorous after-school and summer academic program closes the opportunity gap for middle school youth in under-served communities. The program’s proven model provides a year-round learning environment, caring role models, and a culture of high expectations, resulting in college-bound scholars with the character, confidence, and skills to succeed.

Horton’s Kids

Horton’s Kids serves children, grades K through 12, living in Wellington Park in Washington, DC’s Ward 8. Horton’s Kids’ mission is to empower at-risk children and prepare them for successful and healthy lives through educational opportunities and comprehensive programs tailored to their needs. Horton’s Kids is looking for dedicated volunteers to tutor and mentor children, grades K through 12! Horton’s Kids has after school tutoring every day of the week during the school year. It also has a mentoring program that works on a more flexible basis.

In the Streets

In the Streets is dedicated to interrupting patterns of generational trauma in Washington, D.C., by treating both the body and the mind. Services are free for service providers, survivors of violence, veterans, and students. Check out the In the Streets website for current volunteer opportunities.

Kid Power DC

Kid Power inspires youth leadership by promoting academic advancement, physical and emotional wellness, and positive civic engagement in under-served communities throughout the District of Columbia. Currently, Kid Power provides innovative after-school and summer programs to approximately 425 elementary and middle school students at ten sites across the city. Kid Power embraces youth voice and believes that every young person can become an informed and engaged advocate for change in their own lives and in their communities.

Latin American Youth Center (LAYC)

The mission of the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) is to empower a diverse population of young people to transition to adulthood through multicultural programs that address their social, academic, and career needs. This nationally recognized agency serves all low-income youth. LAYC serves more than 4,000 young people and families through youth centers, school-based sites, and public charter schools in the District of Columbia and Maryland’s Prince George’s and Montgomery counties as the Maryland Multicultural Youth Center. Each year, LAYC volunteers donate hundreds of hours to projects such as tutoring, space beautification, and serving meals at annual community holiday celebrations.

The Latino Student Fund

The Latino Student Fund (LSF) works to provide opportunities for a strong academic foundation for under-served PreK-12th grade students of Hispanic descent and to promote higher education and professional leadership. The LSF was founded in 1994 to address the growing high school dropout rates among Latino students in Washington, DC.

Learning Life

Learning Life is a DC-based educational nonprofit that develops innovative learning communities in order to widen and deepen participation in democracy and diplomacy. We seek mentors/advisors with communications, storytelling, or international experience to help guide youth involved in our Democracy Learning Community or our Family Diplomacy Initiative.

Life Pieces to Masterpieces

Life Pieces To Masterpieces is a safe sanctuary for hundreds of African American young men and boys. More than 90 percent of its Apprentices live in Wards 7 and 8. It needs volunteers to help with homework, snack time and mentoring. It employs the “4Cs”: Students Connect to themselves and to their classmates through meditation, journal writing, drumming, dancing, poetry, and art. They Create — homework, artwork, and poems. They Contribute — sharing their work and their thinking with the greater community, they take pride in their work but also learn public speaking skills, confidence and discipline. And they Celebrate their successes.

Lutheran Social Services National Capital Area (LSSNCA)

Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) serves refugees, displaced people, immigrants, children and youth, and underserved communities in the DC Metro. LSSNCA has piloted initiatives such as the area’s first camp for kids impacted by HIV/AIDS, pro se asylum workshops for Afghan Allies, and launching a resource center to serve as a community hub. Volunteer opportunities abound, ranging from one-day events to ongoing support through building relationships with program participants. LSSNCA has launched a Refugees Give Back program, in which those who have lived in the United States for at least two years and are not receiving services from the organization serve as advocates and peer support alongside newly arrived program participants. Volunteer opportunities include mentoring, ESL, resume building, job searches, and transportation to and from interviews.

Malcolm X Elementary School

DCPS believes that all schools must provide caring and supportive environments. School environments that are safe and welcoming better enable students and staff to learn and teach.

Midtown Youth Academy

The Midtown Youth Academy (the “organization”) was founded in 1977 by Eugene R. Hughes, a boxing trainer and drug abuse counselor, who was acutely aware of the conditions that often led youth of the District of the Columbia to become involved in drug addiction and crime. Through the organization, Mr. Hughes recruited volunteers to work with neighborhood youth to provide boxing lessons as a therapeutic recreational outlet and an after-school tutoring program in test preparation, arts and technology, entrepreneurship, and other skills.

Northstar Tutoring (DC)

Northstar Tutoring provides free, year round services for low-income students living in Washington, D.C. Northstar Tutoring is a unique mix of tutoring and mentoring for low-income families in Washington, D.C. Partnering with families, educators and volunteers, Northstar has spent almost 30 years providing twice weekly tutoring and regular mentoring activities to some of D.C.’s most under-served students.

Oasis Tutoring Program

Oasis Tutoring volunteers help children in grades K-4 in Montgomery County and Washington, D.C., public schools build reading skills, self-esteem, and positive attitudes toward learning. Teaching experience is optional. Training and materials are provided. Tutors work one-on-one with the same child for the entire school year.

Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources (OAR)

Opportunities, Alternatives & Resources (OAR) rebuilds lives, breaks the cycle of crime, and creates safer communities in Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince Williams counties in Northern Virginia. This organization works with those involved in the criminal justice system and their families. Many volunteer opportunities exist to help OAR further its mission. Once chosen for a specific volunteer opportunity, individuals receive a program orientation, on-the-job training, and continued coaching.

Playtime Project

The homeless shelter which creates play spaces for youth. Trained and screened volunteers have provided weekly activities, healthy snacks, and opportunities to play and learn for the children at the emergency shelter and transitional housing sites in the District of Columbia.

Potomac River Young Marines

The Young Marines is a national youth education and service program for boys and girls from age 8 through high school graduation. The program promotes its members’ mental, moral, and physical development. This nonprofit focuses on teaching youth the values of leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline to lead a healthy, drug-free life and become productive members of society. Interested adults are encouraged to volunteer.

Raising a Village

Raising A Village Foundation is looking for volunteers who are interested in serving as academic tutors and mentors for its education initiative, the Driven 2 Succeed program at HD Woodson High School. Driven 2 Succeed is a youth development program for elementary, middle and high school students that provides support in the areas of academia, social-emotional learning, and college and career preparedness. This is a one or two day a week position serving grades 9th through 12th.

Reading Partners

Reading Partners provides one-on-one reading partners instruction to elementary school students reading below grade level to help them succeed in school and in life. Reading Partners builds a partnership with teachers, parents, and community volunteers to provide students the support they need. By providing volunteer tutors research-based, structured lesson plans designed to focus on the individual needs of our students, Reading Partners helps students become strong, confident readers with a passion for learning.

RESET: Raising Excitement for Science, Engineering, and Technology

RESET is a STEM-focused nonprofit in the DC Metro area that provides children with hands-on science lessons, interactive experiments, and field trips. The goal is to teach youth in an engaging, relevant, and fun way, helping them to make connections between life and learning. Current and retired STEM professionals, as well as students, are encouraged to volunteer. Prior volunteering or teaching experience is optional.

Serve Your City

We are guided by the principle of “Solidarity, NOT Charity.” We, the community, keep us safe for our common survival and well-being and share a common responsibility. For more than a decade, Serve Your City (SYC) has provided life-changing experiences and opportunities for at-risk DC students, giving Black and Brown children access to rowing, swimming, yoga, tennis, tutoring, and inspiring experiences often not readily available to children from under-resourced families.

So Others Might Eat

SOME is an interfaith, community-based service organization with comprehensive programs designed to help our neighbors experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty find pathways out of poverty and achieve long-term stability and success. SOME offers a variety of services, including affordable housing, counseling, substance use disorder treatment, and job training.

So What Else

The DC Chapter of the So What Else Food Rescue Bank began in 2020 after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since grown to support more than 2,000 families every week. Today, the program primarily serves the Southeast DC neighborhoods through a mobile distribution model, bringing food directly to the underserved communities they work with. The team also hosts several community events and volunteer opportunities across the city, including community clean-ups, voter registration days, holiday celebrations, and more.

SOUL

SOUL (Student-Athletes Organized to Understand Leadership) connects high school-aged youth who are involved in sports to diverse opportunities that build the life skills needed to succeed in academics and careers. They do this by engaging students in six core programs, including: College Access Study Hall, Sister Circle, Young Men’s Roundtable, Sustainability Education, and College 101.

Spark the Journey is a non-profit organization that provides mentorship and a community of support for young adults to chart their own paths to achieving college and career success. We envision a future where every young person can attain economic mobility, regardless of education, background, or race. Here is how we can reach that vision:

StreetWise Partners

StreetWise Partners connects underrepresented talent to mentorships and career opportunities in the DC Metro area. Its programs empower adults ages 18-65 with the skills, resources, and access to networks to secure and maintain employment. StreetWise Bridge is a one-year mentoring program that provides 1:1 career development support. Those who wish to become mentors are asked to attend an information session, apply online, interview with StreetWise staff, and attend training.

The Family Place

The mission of The Family Place (TFP) is to empower low-income families in the DC area and to foster the optimal development of their young children through educational and support services. TFP also offers adult educational services through The Family Place Public Charter School. Volunteer support plays a crucial role in the TFP mission, ensuring food distribution, strengthening community ties, and providing vital support to families.

The Music In Me Foundation

The Music in Me Foundation International provides in school and after school programs, performance events, community events, professional development training services and curriculum integration strategies. All of our programs are designed holistically to develop the mind, body and spirit. Our approach is distinctive, utilizing a combination of multimodality approaches through the performing arts, social emotional wellness checks from trained staff & social workers and mentoring to help prepare for college, career & citizenship.

The National Center for Children & Families

The National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) serves vulnerable children, youth, and families in the National Capital Region by providing them with access to programs that inspire their ability to thrive and give back. Services include adolescent and youth development, family support and housing services, and foster care and adoption services. More than 2,000 NCCF volunteers, including mentors, support the NCCF mission. Age requirements vary by program.

Year Up

Year Up is a nationwide job training program with a campus in Washington, D.C. The program, which takes a year or less to complete, is 100% tuition-free. Participants receive the support, tools, and resources needed to succeed in their desired career path regardless of their background, income, or zip code. Volunteers work with young adults in Year Up in various ways, depending on location. Opportunities include conducting mock job interviews, providing resume reviews, and academic tutoring. Volunteers must have at least three years of full-time professional work experience or be a Year Up alums.
