Fall Program

MacFarland’s Fall Program will run Mondays through Fridays between 9am to 3:30pm. The school URGENTLY needs volunteers who can spend 1 to 3-hours at least once a week supporting basic middle school coursework including English and Math, English as a Second Language, and STEM classes for students between 6th and 8th grade, as well as other extracurriculars like sports, art, music, and other extracurriculars, so if you have hobbies that you’d like to center your volunteering around, let us know!

Volunteers of all backgrounds are needed, especially bilingual Spanish-English speakers.  If there are specific subject areas where you prefer to help, please let us know!

Summer School Program (Applications Closed)

MacFarland‘s Summer School Program will run Mondays through Fridays between 9am to 12:30pm. The school URGENTLY needs volunteers who can spend 1 to 3-hours at least once a week supporting basic middle school coursework including English and Math, English as a Second Language, and STEM classes for students between 6th and 8th grade. Volunteers of all backgrounds are needed, especially bilingual Spanish-English speakers.  If there are specific subject areas where you prefer to help, please let us know!

Dates

The summer program will run from June 26 – July 31, 2024

Fall volunteer opportunities will start after August 26th

Will you be away for a week or two? No worries!  Volunteering is flexible – we’d love to have as many people involved including any friends or family who might be interested. Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to partake in both the Summer School and Fall Programs.

Application Process

Step 1.  DCPS Background Check Process

The first step in volunteering is completing a DCPS background check – let us know if you need any assistance in obtaining this.

It took us 20 minutes to complete the online DCPS form and 5 minutes to stop by a local UPS store, which handles the fingerprinting.  Below is the contact information you would need for the background check:

MacFarland MS
Sandra Walker-McLean
sandra.walker-mclean@k12.dc.gov
(202) 671-6033

You are not required to submit a drug test so please skip that option. You may be required to submit a Tuberculosis (TB) test only if you have traveled to an area where TB is common.

If you do not have a Social Security Number (SSN), you may enter “9999” as the last 4 digits of your SSN on the clearance application. However, you will need to send a copy of your passport photo page to dcps.clearance@k12.dc.gov after you have submitted your application. Please use the email subject “[Your First Name] [Your Last Name] Passport Photo Page for SOR Check” when submitting your documents after your clearance application submission.

There is no “Submit” button for your background check application – clicking “Save” will submit your form.

Step 2.  Fingerprint appointment

After submitting your form, you will receive an email with instructions for scheduling your fingerprinting appointment. This email will come from applicationstation@truescreen.com and the email will be titled “Background Investigation Forms Requested”. The code is FPDCEMPLOYEE. Please be aware that this link is typically active for about 24 hours. Therefore, it’s essential to activate it promptly and schedule your fingerprinting check.

Once all steps are completed, you should receive your DCPS Clearance email in 1-3 days with a PDF of your DCPS Clearance Letter attached. Please send your DCPS Clearance Letter to info@dctutormentor.org and Terra Jones Terra.Jones@k12.dc.gov.

Step 3.  Let Us Know!

Completed your background check and fingerprinting process? Email info@dctutormentor.org or call 202-688-1261 to receive the 2-minute volunteer application form to indicate your interest and availability for the MacFarland School team and we will connect you with MacFarland’s staff to get started.*  (Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions!)

In the meantime, we invite you to stay up-to-date on MacFarland programming, as well as other events on our website and social media pages (@dcTutorMentor on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok) as well as signing up for our newsletter. We’re excited to get you started!

*  Why this second step?  The Macfarland staff are extraordinarily busy managing the summer school and have asked DCTMI to only send volunteers who have completed their DCPS clearance process so MacFarland staff members don’t need to manage that process themselves.
